This Research Review E-Learning Module, intended for GPs, reviews and compares the global burden of disease, patterns of disease activity and modes of transmission associated with COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as well as the effectiveness of vaccines and official recommendations for their use. It is based on a Research Review Speaker Series publication entitled “Vaccination for older adults pre-winter season and in travellers: key respiratory viral illnesses”.

Learning outcomes

- Describe the severity of disease associated with RSV compared with COVID-19 and influenza
- Advise patients on the risks of respiratory viral transmission associated with travel
- Explain to patients the protection against respiratory viral illness offered by vaccines
- Advise patients on eligibility, funding and recommended timing of vaccines against RSV, COVID-19 and influenza

Content for the Research Review Speaker Series was provided by:
Dr John Cameron, an Auckland General Practitioner who has been significantly involved in organising General Practice initiatives within New Zealand, having worked for ProCare Health for over 18 years, initially as Medical Executive and subsequently as Clinical Director.
Professor Marc Shaw, a Fellow of the International Society of Travel Medicine and Medical Director of Worldwise GeoMed, New Zealand. Specialising in travel and expedition medicine, he advises on appropriate planning for healthy global travel. He is also Adjunct Professor at James Cook University, Queensland, Australia.
Module questions have been developed by Dr Chris Tofield who works part time in General Practice in Tauranga, New Zealand, is involved in clinical research and is a clinical advisor to the Bay of Plenty District Health Board.
